Trying to wake myself up

I think the food situation this past week has finally got me in a nose lock.

Even without taking home many Thanksgiving leftovers, the fridge was filled this week with things I made over the weekend, including steamed broccoli and cauliflower, some beet salad with cucumber, and a bunch of turkey soup.

Meanwhile, my mother had given me bean soup, lox, sliced ham...

...and split pea soup.

Fortunately, I was able to eat a lot of this at work...

...salmon with my egg white omelet and avocado...
...broccoli/cauliflower as a snack...
...beats as a snack...
...ham slices as a meal.

And, on Monday night, we were able to eat in and create a greater dent of the food.

But, with company in town from Tuesday through Thursday, there was a lot of taking out or eating out...

...making the fried seafood burritos a horrible choice (Lupitas - Oberlin)...

...as well as the nachos and Italian Grinder got at Ziggy's in Amherst.

Ugh!

The healthy beets, broccoli, cauliflower and eggs whites had no chance again the sodium-filled soups, salmon, ham, burritos, nachos and grinder.

This morning, it felt like my clothes were all squeezing me tightly.

My 39th birthday is less than a month away, folks, and I need to reel it in so that I make it to that day...

...and with the appearance of actually being in shape.

I've got to eat better, cut the holiday food crap and exercise more (this is important since the baby/visitor schedules have made this a little more difficult lately).

Because if I don't lose this weight now and get into a healthier lifestyle...

...who knows what consequences will be waiting for me around the corner?

Thanksgiving Weekend 2012

Mere days after I was eating a simple zucchini pasta that I made...

...I brought some bacon-wrapped water chestnuts to my brother's...

...where I devoured a Thanksgiving feast of ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, 2 types of stuffing, cranberries, corn casserole, vegetable casserole, pickled eggs...

 ...turkey...

...some great homemade bread (thanks, Bill!)...

...and a touch of some turkey-shaped butter.

All together, that collection of delicious food goodness...
 .

...looked like this!

Meanwhile, although enthusiastic about his first Thanksgiving ever...
 .

...Max was limited to a strictly milk diet...

...but he didn't seem to mind.

 After finishing our plates...

...my sister-in-law brought out these decadent desserts...

...alone with a chocolate trifle, banana pudding, and probably other things I can't remember...

...helping me put another plate together like this...

...which I topped with some maple whipped cream.

(My father had the same idea.)

By the end of the evening, I was overstuffed...

...so I didn't take large carvings from the enormous turkey.

Instead, I wanted the carcass.

Not only was I able to pull this much meat from the bones...

...but I was able to make a turkey soup with swiss chard, carrots and stelline pasta...

...and it was nice to go simple again...

...especially after all the eating I had done.

Some Food for Thought

Although I'm a huge fan of bringing together various leftovers together like this quiche, chicken, pumpkin soup and side of salad....

...I've been feeling blessed by the site of a sleeping baby in a car seat...

...since it means I can eat a seafood burrito at Quesadilla's in Amherst.

Of course, sometimes the baby wakes up a little early...

...but I can finish up in a hurry before his annoyed expression turns into a hunger cry.

He's such a little eater like his daddy!

This past Sunday, we were doubly rewarded...

...as Julia and I not only ate at Jin House in Amherst...

...but we got to go grocery shopping as well.

Being surrounded by food obviously makes him feel at home.

Holiday Tree Festival Gala Preview Dinner

Two years ago, during my regular festival hopping, I had the pleasure of visiting and reviewing the Holiday Tree Festival, put on by the Volunteers of Akron Children's Hospital.

You can read my review of that festival HERE.

Well, as luck would have it, someone in the organization saw my blog review and invited me back to the festival, as well as the Preview Dinner the night before the opening!

Festival invite AND free food?

Of course I said, "Yes!"

Like two years ago, there were plenty of great trees...

...decorated with trains...

...Dr. Seuss fun...

...gingerbread...

...and Lamb Chop...

...while others were made of spheres...

...bottles...

...and paper.

But go check it out yourself!  It lasts until November 25th!

................................................................................

During the dinner...

...as the Claus family entertained the kids...

...I devoured a roasted red pepper and gouda soup (see comments)...

...a delicious plate of filet mignon with Merlot reduction, stuffed Frenched chicken, asparagus and vanilla sweet potato souffle with pecans...

...and an incredible dessert bar...

...with swan cream puffs...

...and cakes galore.

Just check out the fantastic dessert plate I created that evening.

Needless to say, I had a blast.

Thanks, Akron Children's Hospital!
