Wyoming - Day 2 - Cody, Heart Mountain and Powell

We woke up that morning in the Irma Hotel, located in downtown Cody.

Dad was already up and having coffee outside.  When Rocky and I joined him, we found him talking to a truck driver from Wisconsin who was there with his family.

Once we all had some coffee, we headed inside for the breakfast buffet (only $10)...

...and really piled on our plates.

In the above picture, you will see sausage, buffalo sausage, super crispy bacon, crispy potato wedges, silver dollar flapjacks, whiskey bread pudding, a tortilla, eggs with chiles and possibly some other stuff mixed in there.

It was delicious but we really stuffed ourselves...

...so we walked around town to burn off some calories.

Here are some things we saw in Cody...

With the calories now burned, it was time to eat again....

...so we went to downtown Cody's Proud Cut Saloon...

...where critters wore hats.

We split an appetizer of Rocky Mountain Oysters, but they were unfortunately not very tasty as well as dry and chewy...nothing like the ones I had in Oklahoma.

The rest of the meal was just like Oklahoma - OK.

We continued walking around the town...

...getting a quick caffeine jolt refresher...

...and then heading out of town past Heart Mountain...

...to stop briefly at the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center...

...and its museum, which closed as we pulled in.

Here on this site...

...Japanese Americans lost their businesses and homes to be relocated here during WWII.

Old structures stood in the distance...

...and a memorial site honored those who lost so much...

...many of them even leaving here to go to war for the United States.

We continued northeast...

...to Powell, Wyoming...

...home of the Hansel and Gretel's Restaurant...

...Powell Drug...

...a big ole bear...

...and some interesting senior photos ("I texted and drove and survived!")...

More importantly, the city of Powell holds some history important to my family...

...like the church where my grandparents got married...

...the old home of my great grandparents on S. Clark...

...and here at the cemetery...

...which we found thanks to motion-activated directory...

...the resting place of my great grandparents and great uncle...

...which is marked with modest stones.

It was great to visit Powell and to later drive through the area known as the Wilwood Irrigation District (which I really don't have great pictures of) with its winding roads, irrigation areas and fields covered in mooing cows.

We ended the day by returning to Cody and trying to figure out dinner.

More out of convenience, we decided to eat at the Irma again with the intention of ordering off the menu.  Unfortunately, menu items tend to me only a few dollars shy of the buffet...

...so you can probably guess what we got.

Author's Note:  the above pic included green beans, oyster rockefellar (where they pureed canned smoked oysters), buffalo ribs and prime rib.

Wowza!

  1. I'm having a hard time deciding if you had a good trip or a bad one?! The food obviously wasn't very good, but who eats Rocky Mountain Oysters anyway? Ick!
